Why does the design of this site suck now? It was good back when they were covering Katrina and the election stuff in 2006. At least I think it was. That's when I stopped visiting the site. The design blows now. I like salon and thinkprogress.

It looked way better before they did this new design. It looks like an amateur modified a pretty good design and layout.

Basic markup (a,strong,em) is okay. URLs and Compuserve handles automatically linked.
